When she was 17, I ain’t never seen someone more alive. I remember driving past this park in Amarillo, all these sports fields. Kids playing soccer on one and… football on another. And on one field, all the sprinklers were running. It was August and hotter than hell. And all those sprinklers made a rainbow above them. She shouts, “Stop the car!” [chuckles] And she leaps out and races through those sprinklers… chasing a rainbow and dancing beneath it. Soaked from head to toe. It was the most beguiling thing I’d ever seen. Someone that free. But… demons run faster than rainbows, and hers caught up to her. I spent 60 years waiting for her rainbow to return. It never did. But that’s life. And I wasted mine on hope.
